Baby, you call me and tell me you lost everything,
You tried so hard, nothing worked out,
I can hear the heartbreak in your voice,
You’re trying hard not to cry,
I ask you gently, baby, baby are you all right?
You apologize to me, saying you failed me,
All the doors were shut, no one would give you break,
You thought what you had was great,
They didn’t agree, you played with your heart and soul,
You tried everywhere,
Now the moneys run out,
You’re taking the train home,
Nothings going right,
The car broke down a few states back,
You had to sell it for the parts,
I hear the sobs in your voice,
Baby, baby I failed you,
Your dad said;
" Son,
you’re too old to go chasing that crazy dream,
You're going to lose your woman, go out and get a decent job."
Your Mom said what are you doing, what were you thinking?
You better do something, she might throw you out.
Oh, baby, baby don’t you worry,
Its still down to you and me,
I don’t care if you didn’t win that award,
Or if you couldn’t book that show,
So what if your songs didn’t sell,
Don’t care what your producers or agents say,
I’ll tell all of them to go straight to hell,
Listen please , let me tell you a story,
Of a modern day Romeo and Juliet,
You stopped to help that funny girl
Sitting on the park bench,
She was blinking kind of goofy,
She was looking around
For a lost contact lens,
She’s an artist, and she got some
Pastel chalk in her eye,
You said excuse me miss,
Can I help you?
As you bent over, she stood up,
And she gave you a bloody nose,
She said; Oh, my god, I’m so sorry,
She took off her silk scarf
To help clean you up.
You saw her drawings,
On the other page was a poem,
You said they were so beautiful,
She looked at you as if she was about to cry,
You couldn’t understand why,
“Really?” She asked, my last guy,
Said it was a silly, stupid past time,
He said I should just be a secretary instead.
What about your family? You asked.
Don’t really have one, father died,
Mom’s sweet, but she wouldn’t understand.
I didn’t know why I was telling a stranger all this,
But there was something when we touched,
I knew I could trust you with so much,
Seems we were in the same boat,
We started talking on that autumn day,
You confessed you played guitar,
And would I like to come listen to you,
You just got a a gig at a local café,
You had to walk me home because I couldn’t see.
Its some years later we’ve been together quite a while,
I’m listening to you apologize on the phone,
Don’t cry baby, I know you tried,
That’s not why I stayed with you.
You believe in me too,
But its more than that,
Remember when we went to the snow,
We laughed so hard,
We made snow angels, and had a snowball fight,
It was so cold , but the fire felt so warm,
We saw snowflakes fall in the moonlight.
There was that day we walked on
Our California beach,
You picked up the prettiest seashells,
And you said, please keep these in a glass jar,
To remind you of this day,
And how are love is always with us,
Even if I’m on the road,
Remember I love you,
When you look at the stars.
I gathered for you in this little glass jar.
When I got restless you said come on baby,
Let me take you to the most beautiful canyon,
With colors you’ll love to paint.
I saw two eagles fly in the sky,
It was a sign, they were like you and I,
No matter where the winds take us,
When we fly together, we fly free
Baby, baby don’t you cry,
I’m trying to tell you our story so you will see,
Baby, I know everyone needs money,
My love, you don’t need to make a fortune for me,
The secret is that we love each other for who we truly are,
Don’t you remember?
When everyone left me, you where there
to rescue the girl who almost gave up,
When I was sick you carried me through the hospital doors.
You held my hand in the hospital room when I was almost gone,
You sang so softly;
Baby, baby hold on, baby baby, be strong,
How could you even think that I would ever throw our love away?
How dare you think its over.
You make me laugh with all your silly jokes,
And what’s better than every night when we snuggle close?
You call me your little half pint, because I’m just shy of
Five foot four,
Being a tall guy you love it because I fit right under your arm,
Baby, baby please don’t ever think
That I love you only if you’re a success,
I don’t care even if you think our life is a mess.
You’ve been with me when no one would understand,
You never judged me for anything,
You see the real me, like I see the real you,
We have so much love,
Baby your success lies in the fact that without you,’
There would be no me,
You saved me on that cold dark day,
No one was there but you.
You understand me, you are all I need.
I believe in you, like you believe in me,
Now do you understand what I mean by loyalty?
It’s been you and me all the time,
I don’t care if all you got is your guitar and one thin dime,
It’s you I want to see,
We found a love from heaven,
Don’t you know how rare that is?
Baby, baby, please don’t cry,
Take the next train,
I love you, please, just come home to me.
